Preparing yourself for a major change

If you’ve had long hair for most of your life, then it can be really difficult to make the change to short hair, and that’s why you need to be prepared. You have to make sure you’re 100% happy to go ahead with the chop, and it takes time to really make up your mind.

If you’re not sure, then just be patient, and if you’re still not sure a month later, then it’s probably not the right time to change your style so drastically. Hair does technically grow overnight, but it’s growing so slowly that it could take years to get that hair back, and that’s why long to short is such a huge decision.

Even the best hairdressers don’t enjoy these changes and most good hairdressers will have one-to-one with the customer, to make sure he or she is ready for the big step.

Maintaining Your Hair Colour

You’ve spent time and money visiting a hair salon to achieve your perfect hair colour. It looks glossy, shiny and vibrant, but even after the first wash it starts to look faded. How should you look after your hair colour to make it last as long as possible?

Most importantly, limit the amount of heat styling equipment which you expose your hair to. When you do use heat, ensure you put a good quality protection spray onto the hair beforehand. You can also use styling products before blow drying to make the hair easier to style – the less time you have to spend styling it, the better. Limit straightener usage to twice a week. This will help prevent the heat from the appliance fading your hair colour, but it will also mean that you hair is in better condition, helping it to hold colour better. This is especially true of the ends, which are prone to damage, dryness and fading.

The other easy way to maintain your hair colour is to ensure that you use high quality products on it. Shampoo and conditioner are especially important, because cheap versions will essentially strip the hair, taking your colour with it. There are all kinds of different product ranges out there, so pick one which is high quality and works well with your colour. Sulphate-free products are the best, as it’s the sulphates which will cause your colour to fade. Many brands offer specific shampoos and conditioners to maintain colour which will be sulphate free. They might cost more, but the investment will be worthwhile and it will keep your colour looking fresh.

From Long to Short

Going from long hair to short hair can be a very big change, and it’s difficult to know how you’re going to look or feel until the cut has been completed. It’s important to make sure you’re fully prepared for such a change; otherwise you could be in for a big surprise.

If you haven’t’ had short hair for many years, it can be easy to get bored of your long locks, but you may grow tired of short hair quickly and then there’s no turning back. You could possibly put extensions in but that’s not going to be the same as having long hair, and it could take years for your hair to grow back fully.

You may get a mixed reaction from friends and family too, but remember the most important thing is how YOU feel. If you think you’re going to feel confident and happier with short hair then go ahead, just make sure you’ve really thought your decision through.

Finding the the Best Hair Salons

In choosing the right hair salons and stylists the first thing you need is patience. You may also need a small financial investment, especially considering that a quality haircut is not cheap and that the best salons are to be found on a trial and error premise. That said, when you do find what you were looking for, you’ll certainly be convinced that no investment was too big.

If you find the right stylist that does not mean that you have necessarily found the appropriate salon too. Here’s what you should take into account, in general, as to be happy with your choice.

What features are you looking for in hair salons? To choose a suitable salon you must first choose what services you want it to offer to you. Want to go to the salon just to get trimmed fast, possibly just the tips, because you always have the same hairstyle? Or you want a room in which to linger for hours, which is your oasis of relaxation only once a month? What are your haircare needs? How delicate is your hair normally? How often do you change your hairstyle or hair colour? Once you have answered all these questions you will have a basic idea of what to look for in a salon.

Beauty parlour in the neighbourhood

If you only go to the hairdresser to trim up quickly and you usually wash your hair at home, if you do not need to apply sophisticated treatments and only use the plate to stretch it from time to time, then you do not need to visit a fancy salon. It is enough to have a chair and a mirror, but the main condition is for your stylist to be somewhat fashion-aware. No matter whether he has too much imagination or he/she uses art products as long as your hairstyle looks well in your opinion. Since you probably don’t have much time to visit several salons, try to find one located in your neighbourhood. You are more likely to develop a friendly relationship with your stylist when the salon is located in the proximity of your home.

The stylist is your hair’s best friend

If you go on the principle that the stylist knows what’s best for your hair and your vision is to totally abandon it, then you really need to find a reputable hair stylist. He should be able to suggest a suitable hairstyle and colour according to your skin, age, face shape, etc. In addition, such stylist is the one that will suggest your daily haircare products in the future, so you should choose one with experience.

Such stylist cannot be found at neighbourhood hair salons but at renowned ones. Remember that you’re going to let your hair on his hands so it’s better to ask for references from friends or acquaintances who regularly go there. If it takes at least 3-4 days before you can program yourself that means it has loyal clientele, so it’s a good sign. If you find stylist that saves any “bad hair day” means that you should go away as soon as possible. Another criterion by which women choose their stylist is the friendship between them. This is not a good criterion: if he/she entertains with stories then the haircut can easily go wrong and you may be unhappy in the end. Remember that you’re the one who pays in the end, so the salon that you attend should leave you going home with a smile on your lips.
